Introduction
In the past, I’ve written a number of articles covering topics such as how to repel spiders naturally and how to make your own spider repellent. Those articles are aimed at people who have already decided they don’t want spiders in their home.
This article is a little different.
Rather than focusing on how to repel spiders, I’d like to explain why I believe repelling them is a far better solution than killing them.
Whether you’re someone who is genuinely frightened of spiders, simply prefers not to share your home with them, or you’re researching different methods of spider control, I hope this article offers a different perspective. It is entirely possible to protect your home while still respecting the important role that spiders play in our natural environment.
It’s Not Just Compassion
A spider is classified as an arachnid, which in turn belongs to the animal kingdom. Although they are often misunderstood and feared, spiders are living creatures that have evolved over millions of years to perform an important role within nature.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to welcome them into your living room.
For many people, particularly those with arachnophobia, the thought of a spider indoors can be genuinely distressing. Wanting them removed from your home is perfectly understandable.
The question is how.
Rather than killing spiders after they’ve settled indoors, you can simply ‘evict’ them by trapping them with a glass whilst also preventing with a natural repellent to simply encourages them to avoid entering in the first place. It solves the problem without causing unnecessary harm and allows people and wildlife to coexist more comfortably.
It is this philosophy that has guided the products we develop at EFA International. My aim has always been to respect the life of spiders, but simply to encourage them to remain where they belong – outdoors.
The Hidden Benefits of Spiders
Despite their reputation, spiders are among nature’s most effective pest controllers.
A single spider may consume dozens of insects over the course of a week, feeding on flies, mosquitoes, moths, aphids and many other small insects that can become a nuisance around our homes and gardens.
Without spiders, many insect populations would grow far more quickly, increasing pressure on gardens, crops and natural habitats. Insect numbers would increase significantly. Gardens would become less balanced. Farmers would face greater pest pressure, potentially requiring increased use of pesticides, while countless birds and other wildlife would lose an important food source.
Nature depends upon balance, and spiders are one of the countless species helping to maintain it. They also form an important part of the food chain, providing food for birds, amphibians and many other animals.
In many ways, spiders quietly perform an essential service that most of us rarely notice.
Five Years of Striving for Humane Spider Control
When I founded EFA International, it was our natural Spider Spray that became our breakthrough product.
Through speaking with people over the years, I realised that spiders are among the most misunderstood creatures we share our homes with. More often than not, they are killed simply because they are feared, rather than because they pose any real threat.
I also noticed that many products marketed for spider control are designed to kill. They often rely on harsh insecticides, aerosol propellants and chemicals that many people would rather not spray around their homes or gardens.
I wanted to create something different.
My goal was to develop a gentle, natural repellent that offered excellent value for money while using responsibly sourced ingredients and recycled packaging wherever possible. During development I tested peppermint oils from around the world before selecting the high-quality organic peppermint oil that remains at the heart of our formula today. Our bottles are also manufactured using recycled plastic wherever possible as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact.
We are now entering our fifth year of supplying natural spider repellents, and our Spider Spray has received almost 2,000 genuine customer reviews on Amazon.
What gives me the greatest satisfaction, however, isn’t simply the number of bottles we’ve sold. It’s knowing that thousands of customers have chosen a humane alternative. Every one of those decisions represents another spider encouraged to remain outdoors rather than becoming another unnecessary casualty.
Final Thoughts
Spiders don’t have to become unwelcome house guests, but neither do they need to become casualties.
Natural repellents offer a practical middle ground, helping to keep homes comfortable while allowing spiders to continue doing what nature intended.
